For a digital space free of violence
The digital space, like any other space where we relate and communicate, is traversed by attacks and discrimination against those who put their bodies and voices in defence of people's rights. One of the effects of this violence is the expulsion of activists from digital spaces, making them less free and safe.
In the study prepared by the University of Vic, with the support of Calala Women's Fund and the funding of The Catalan Agency for Development Cooperation (ACCD) , Almost half a million aggressions were detected on Twitter, only in 50 accounts of feminist activists in 2020. The research concludes that this violence is very frequent and affects the fundamental rights of feminist activists.
This June, the Universitat de Vic and Calala, together with the activists Lucia Mbomio, Adnaloi Vila, Desirée Bela-Lobedde y Helena Maleno we have produced 4 audiovisual capsules to denounce the violence that activists experience in the networks from their experiences in these spaces. The aim of these videos is to give visibility to these realities in order to transform digital spaces and make them safer and freer for all people who want to put their voices out there.
Desirée Bela-Lobedde, Afrofeminist activist and writer: “The people who are being attacked are leaving digital spaces, not the aggressors”.”
Helena Maleno, migration researcher and human rights defender: “All violence has an impact on a person's life and ends up causing harm and worry.”
Adnaloi Vila, trans and fat activist: “Thanks to solidarity, mutual support and sisterhood, I have been able to move forward and continue to fight”.”
Lucia Mbomio, journalist: ”There are very few people who have not experienced violence in the networks when they choose to talk about race or racism”.”
