August 2019 saw the completion of the ten years since the founders of Calala went to the notary's office to establish the only women's fund in Spain. Ten years! With what purpose? To achieve strengthened, articulated, diverse feminist groups and movements with advocacy capacity in Central America and Spain. Why feminist movements? Because they have been key in sustaining, defending and advancing women's human rights and gender justice around the world.
What have we achieved in 2019?
In 2019 Calala gave €695,441 to 62 women's and feminist groups in Central America, Mexico and Spain, 64% of our annual budget. More than €16,000 was thanks to the 86 people who believed in our work. For us, individual donations are the essence of Calala, as 100% of that money is given to the groups, without restrictions. We want to continue to count on your support. Make a donation.
The groups invested the money in free women in prison for abortion; promote the sexual education between young people and the right to sexual diversity of young people and the lesbians and trans women; to prevent and tackle the male violence and the racism; to protect human rights defenders; The rights of migrant women y domestic and care workers; to promote a activism that doesn't cost your life...
The list may sound unspecific and unattainable, so in our 2019 Annual Report we set out all the achievements the groups have made: Evelyn Hernandez, The young Salvadoran woman accused of aggravated homicide for having suffered an abortion, regained his freedom and was acquitted after three years in prison. The three activists of Pussy Insubordination accused by Christian Lawyers of offences against religious feelings were acquitted. The anti-racist and decolonial feminism was made visible and celebrated at the 8M in Spain. The Campaign for legal, safe and free abortion participated in the FCannes Summer Film Festival accompanying the film “Que sea Ley” by Juan Solanas.
Much has been achieved, but much remains to be done.
The far right and anti-gender groups are becoming more and more prevalent. Extractive companies continue to exploit the natural resources of the territories in Central America, expelling, threatening and murdering the indigenous communities that defend them. The Spanish state has still not ratified the ILO Convention 189 on domestic and care workers. Women continue to be murdered, raped, threatened, and made precarious.
That is why it is more important than ever that we support women's organisations to achieve a world where we all have dignity, fulfilment and joy. We hope that our 2019 Annual Report will be the impetus you need to take action and make a donation. Let us use our economic privilege to build a fairer society. As the Muyeres Pachamama, a group we support, say:
“When we are together everything can be easier, together we take care of each other, together we grow and together we fight”.
