we care for those who care calala bilbao event
On 14 December in Bilbao, the event "Do we care for those who care?" was held, promoted by Calala Fondo de Mujeres and Fundación Paz y Solidaridad Euskadi. In collaboration with groups such as Mujeres con Voz and Comisiones Obreras Euskadi, the event debated the dignity of care services, highlighting the lack of social and economic recognition of this sector, especially in the case of migrant workers. The event promoted a dialogue between organisations and citizens to defend labour rights and improve care conditions.

We proposed to Mujeres con Voz, Mujeres Tejiendo Red and Comisiones Obreras Euskadi to initiate a dialogue on care services.

Care, which is essential to sustain life, is not being valued in its true dimension.

The social reality of the last few years, marked by the crisis caused by the pandemic, The report, which was published by the European Commission, brought an inescapable fact into the public debate: care, essential to sustain life, are not being valued in their true dimension.

Caring for the basic needs of all people, and especially for dependent persons, the elderly and children, is a task which is not recognised socially, politically and economically. In addition to be taken on by families and other emotional ties with little public support. On the other hand, when care is delegated to workers, it is common for care to fall short of what is needed. decent conditions. In the case of migrant workers, The majority of the population in this sector, in addition to the above, is the vulnerability The current law on foreigners and the different realities of individual migration processes affect their lives.

Promote cross-fertilisation to achieve common goals around the dignity of care services.

Under this premise, and with the support of the Bilbao City Council, Calala Women’s Fund and Fundación Paz y Solidaridad Euskadi we proposed to Women with a Voice, Women Weaving Network y Comisiones Obreras Euskadi initiate an experience of dialogue around care services. Among the main themes that emerged were the need for work-life balance, the defence of labour rights and the use of decent care services for both workers and users.

Each actor has a variety of organisational mechanisms, actions, expertise and approaches that respond to needs and objectives identified in the areas of: the care, the incidence, the approach to the citizenship and dialogue in spaces of power negotiation of policies. The aim of this experience is to promote mutual enrichment in order to achieve common objectives around the dignification of care services.

What conclusions have emerged from this dialogue?

As a culmination of this process, on 14 December 2021, we will hold a event in Bilbao to nurture this dialogue with the experiences and knowledge of citizens around care, both as domestic and care workers and as users of services. There, emphasis was placed on how many migrant women are organised for years in peer groups for the defence of their rights, the mutual support and the awareness-raising The sector's role is to raise public awareness of the responsibility for care and the service provided by the sector. In turn, the trade unions are also key actors, with a recognised voice and experience in advocacy and defence of labour rights.

In addition, in this report The process, the reflections that emerged and the common starting points for the future are recounted.

Finally, these video capsules so that citizens can get to know the different points of view of the entities involved in this project, in relation to care.
