10 migrant and diverse women discuss their reality in the COVID-19 crisis with Pamela Palenciano

calala resistance boxes webinar
The feminist migrant movement has created emergency funds to support the most vulnerable compañeras in the face of the current crisis. As part of this initiative, 10 Cajas de Resistencias talks to feminist activist Pamela Palenciano about the situation faced by migrant and racialised women in the context of COVID-19. Listen to this conversation where the realities of these women and the impact of the 10 emergency funds set up in Spain to face the challenges caused by the pandemic are discussed.

Calala is organising this online meeting to make visible the reality that migrant women in Spain are living in the face of the crisis caused by the pandemic. We call on the citizens to collaborate with these emergency funds set up to cover essential needs such as food, medicines, accommodation (rent and bills) and the purchase of protection materials for the most vulnerable colleagues.

In order for some to stay at home, others have to go out and continue to sustain life, this crisis does not affect us all in the same way. Listen to the discussion and use your privileges to support affected colleagues. Let's get together and work together to demand rights and build the new society we want!

What is the reality for migrant women in Spain in the face of this pandemic?

The social and economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has left many people unemployed and without any benefits to cover basic needs. Undocumented and racialised migrants have found themselves facing a pandemic that has left them with no income; they are ineligible for official support; with their regularisation process paralysed due to the collapse of the administrations; without compensation or unemployment for working without a contract; or working without protection materials; and in some cases they have even found themselves homeless because they have lost their jobs as live-in domestic workers.

The limitations imposed by the Spanish state for the management of the state of alarm, and the Law on Foreigners - which does not allow you to work, but does not allow you to regularise your situation without proving that you have been in the country for three years - make it impossible to confront this pandemic while complying with the premise of “leaving no one behind”.

What collective strategies are they pursuing to care for themselves and subsist?

In the face of such a turbulent situation, we see how new networks of solidarity have been created, and how those already woven have been strengthened. Today we ask you not to be afraid and to support us either by contributing money or other resources, by making this situation visible and by doing political advocacy...

The proceeds are used to cover essential needs such as food, medicine, shelter (rent and bills) and the purchase of protection materials. At this meeting we learned about the initiatives of:
