European Funds for Feminist and LGTBIAQ+ Organisations: New Roots4Rights Project

european funds feminist organisations lgtbiaq roots4rights
The Roots4Rights project, developed together with Asociación Otro Tiempo, seeks to strengthen feminist and LGTBIAQ+ organisations in Spain. Through a call for funds and a training programme, we prioritise support to groups led by migrant, racialised and LGTBIAQ+ women. This approach promotes sustainability, inclusive leadership and advocacy in a context of growing social challenges. Find out how we continue to promote a more equal society!

In the framework of the European Union's call for proposals CERV-2024-CITIZENS-VALUES, which supports civil society organisations active in the protection and promotion of European values, we have been selected, together with our partner the Another Time Association (part of the project Roots4Rights), to receive a grant of 6.599.687€. This financial support will be used to strengthen women's and LGTBIAQ+ social organisations in Spain.

With these resources, we will be able to continue providing financial support, accompaniment and training to organisations that face significant funding and sustainability difficulties. Despite the crucial role they play in the consolidation of a more just, egalitarian and democratic society, these organisations often face discrimination, bureaucratisation and a lack of gender focus on the part of public and private funders.

Roots4Rights: Roots for Rights

The project Roots4Rights responds to the need for advocacy in an unfavourable context for feminist and LGTBIAQ+ organisations. Factors such as budgetary instability, insufficient organisational infrastructures and lack of training opportunities limit their possibilities for growth and sustainability. This affects their ability to protect, promote and raise awareness of the rights of women, girls and LGTBIAQ+ people, and has a negative impact on their leadership and social participation.

Roots4Rights seeks to address these issues by offering financial support and organisational strengthening through two main activities in 2025.

Two Key Activities for 2025

With a four-year implementation period, the project includes two main activities for 2025:

1. Public Call for Funds

In the first half of 2025, we will launch a call for proposals to provide financial resources to groups in Spain. Priority will be given to organisations led by:

    • Migrant and racialised women.
    • Women of African descent and women with disabilities.
    • Members of the LGTBIAQ+ collective.

The call for proposals will specify the requirements and selection criteria, ensuring a democratic and transparent process. The aim is to support small and medium-sized entities that have a significant impact on their communities, but often do not receive sufficient attention from traditional funders.

2. Capacity Building Programme

The programme will be open to all feminist and LGTBIAQ+ organisations, whether or not they are beneficiaries of the call for proposals. It will include:

    • Technical training: Project management, financial sustainability and organisational strengthening.
    • Organisational care: Promotion of the well-being and responsible care of internal staff, with a feminist and human rights approach.

Activities will be carried out in face-to-face and digital formats, fostering inclusion and collaboration between organisations.

Expected Project Impact

Thanks to this EU grant, we will be able to:

  • Strengthening more than 50 organisations in Spain.
  • Promote the organisational resilience of vulnerable groups.
  • Promoting leadership of women and LGTBIAQ+ people in their communities.

In addition, this project will enable progress towards a more egalitarian society, promoting human rights and improving opportunities for historically marginalised groups.

Communication and Transparency Strategy

Transparency will be a priority at each stage of the project. All information on the progress, beneficiaries and activities of the project will be available on the websites and social networks of Calala y Other Time. We will publish regular updates, including impact stories and testimonials from beneficiary organisations.

In addition, we will implement digital tools that facilitate access to information for all stakeholders, from donors to participating organisations. This reinforces our commitment to clarity and accountability.

A significant contribution to the Feminist and LGTBIAQ+ Movement

This grant marks a turning point for us. With these resources, we will be able to contribute significantly to the feminist and LGTBIAQ+ movement, promoting a more inclusive and equitable society. We will continue to work to ensure that these organisations have the support they need to fulfil their mission and continue to advance rights in Spain and beyond.

The impact of this project will not only benefit the organisations directly involved, but also the communities in which they operate. This reinforces our commitment to social justice, gender equality and human rights.
