1733 murders in 10 years: a shocking reality

The report of Global Witness (2021) reveals that 1,733 land defenders killed in the last decade. The 68% of the cases occurred in Abya Yala (Mesoamerica and South America).

Social, economic, environmental and political factors - driven by corporations, multinationals and backed by governments in the Global South under pressure from the Global North - force thousands to flee their territories. Some of these people find refuge thanks to institutional reception programmes in Spain.

A decolonial approach to transforming cooperation

This report analyses these reception programmes from the point of view of decolonisationl, in the framework of a project of Calala Women’s Fund funded by the Catalan Agency for Development Cooperation.

Its objective: making voices and sentiments visible of those who use these programmes and those who accompany women defenders. Their experiences provide keys to transforming protection and ensuring that no one is left out.

Recommendations: from tightrope walking to solid bridges

The report states key recommendations to turn the “tightrope of cooperation” into bridges of cooperation. dialogue and active listening between the Global South and the Global North.

 Some outstanding recommendations:

  • Decolonise international cooperation and humanitarian aid.

  • Opening spaces for others epistemologies and forms of community organisation.

  • Ensure that cooperation policies are responsive to the needs of the real needs of migrant populations.

  • Building consensus between all actorsWomen human rights defenders, local organisations, public institutions and civil society.
