Do your New Year's resolutions include the following #DonatePower?
In 2019 we managed to mobilise almost €550,000 for women's movements in Central America and Spain.
I WANT #DONARPOWER!
With the new year comes new resolutions. But, at Calala, we've been making the same one since 2009.
Since 2009, our goal is to contribute to the strengthening of the women's and feminist movement for more equitable societies. Our annual goal? To mobilise more and more resources for women who are truly making a difference.
For this reason, today we would like to ask you if your resolutions include the following #DonatePower. Many of you have already put it into practice by donating to our campaign. “Power to donate, power to donate”.”, and those who do not... You still have time! In addition to sending you a “creative capsule” with seeds of Mediterranean plants, and a receipt for your donation with which you can deduct 75% of what you donate, we want to finish off convince you by telling you all that has been achieved in the past year thanks to people like you.
In 2019 we support 56 women's groups with almost €550,000
More than €350,000 to 18 groups in Central America and more than €180,000 to 37 groups in Spain. Of these amounts, we would like to highlight that 16.000€ comes directly from all the people who donated to Calala; The money went entirely to women's and feminist groups. We would also like to thank the Catalan Agency for Development Cooperation and the Basque Agency for Development Cooperation for their support, as they have helped us to mobilise more than €250,000 in 2019 alone.
Last year also we opened two calls for funding in Spain: “Migrant Power” y “Active and Safe Feminisms”.”. With “Poder Migrante” we gave €50,000 to 16 migrant women's groups and €9,200 to 5 other groups in collaboration with the Mediterranean Women's Fund; and with “Feminismos Activos y Seguros” we support with €18,000 several feminist activists and organisations that are being violated for their feminist activism.
Finally, we highlight the travel and capacity-building grants that we offer to grassroots groups in Central America. With these funds they have made international advocacy trips; they have attended regional and international meetings where they make contacts, share experiences and learnings; and they have benefited from consultancies to multiply their organisational capacities. In 2019, we are awarding 6 of these grants for a total value of €9,300.
And what do the groups we support achieve with these resources?
- Free unjustly convicted women to prison sentences of more than 30 years for abortion-related crimes in El Salvador.
- Providing safe spaces for women defenders human rights organisations in Central America and Mexico with houses of protection and healing.
- Promoting safe sex and relationships among young people in rural areas with sex education workshops in Central America.
- Advocate for local councils to create action plans against gender violence. in El Salvador.
- To rally more people in favour of decriminalising abortion in Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador. In Nicaragua alone, 16,400 raped and pregnant girls have been forced to become mothers.
- Making indigenous women's voices heard through popular education radio projects led by the women themselves in Guatemala.
- Empowering lesbian-bisexual, trans and gender non-conforming girls and young women to reduce the stigma, discrimination and violence they suffer in Honduras.
- Negotiating better conditions for domestic and care workers in the Spanish State, of which 70% are migrants and 95% are women, and their integration into the General Social Security Scheme.
- And much more...
There are countless actions that they carry out. We believe it is our responsibility to contribute to change and support young women and girls who are building a better world for all. Will you join us?
