Online gender-based violence, a growing problem of global proportions
The scope and importance of the internet in our lives is such that we are beginning to perceive its use as a human right. However, according to the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE), in the context of the current pandemic of violence against women and girls, online gender-based violence is a growing problem of global proportions and with very significant consequences. This digital violence targets especially women who fight for their rights, those who belong to vulnerable groups, to those already suffering violence offline and activists, spearheading feminist demands, questioning gender roles and the violence that sustains male privilege.
The Internet is a new public space with exponentially growing influence. It is essential to ensure that it constitutes a safe, violence-free and empowering place for women and girls.
Calala has been working on research into gender-based cyber-violence since 2018
Together with feminist jurist Laia Serra, Pikara Magazine and with the support of Frontline Defenders, on 4 December 2018. we registered in the Spanish Congress of Deputies on Online Gender-Based Violence Report. (available at English).
As a result of this initial research, in March 2019 we will organise a conference on “Cyber-violence and women's political participation”.” at the CCCB Barcelona, where we invite you to leading feminist activists to share their individual experiences and strategies, in order to build collective strategies.
Thus, Calala commissions Komons e Hybridas to carry out research into online male violence against feminist activists which we presented on Wednesday 10 June. In addition, we took the opportunity for Donestech and Antígona to show the results of the research they have also carried out on this topic. Together we discussed the results and began to develop strategies to continue working in this line.
