Our history

Back in 2009, a group of feminist women with a strong connection to the Central American region (Ana, Angeles, Justa, Amanda, Clara, Emilienne and Carme) we decided to create a women's fund in Spain. Its objective? Power bring resources of Spanish cooperation to grassroots organisations in Central America. We call it Calala, name used for the passion fruit in Central America.

In 2009 we had nothing but the desire to contribute to a change, and was the Central American Women's Fund who gave us the financial support necessary to register as a foundation in Spain. This is how we became the first and only Women's Fund in Spain to date.

Although to be honest, at that time our team consisted of a person who worked from his home in Barcelona. Then we have the support from Mama Cash, a large global women's fund.

In 2014 we opened an office in Madrid. We were already a team of three and we started to look for resources also from cooperation agencies. The first to open the door for us was the Catalan Agency for Development Cooperation, Thanks to them we were able to support more women's groups.

And we are still growing today, we have offices in Barcelona, Madrid and Bilbao. Calala is part of Prospera, the largest network of women's funds.

Our work would not be possible without all the people and organisations that collaborate with us so that every day more and more women have the power to decide the life we want.
